Useful examples
I walked to work yesterday.
I went to work on foot yesterday.
Walk is regular, so its past form is walked.
I finished work at six yesterday.
I completed my work at six yesterday.
The action is presented as completed, so the Past Simple is used.
My brother is taller than me.
My brother has more height than I do.
Tall is a short adjective, so we add -er.
This coffee is too hot to drink.
The coffee is so hot that drinking it is difficult or not suitable yet.
Too comes before the adjective hot and shows that the temperature causes a problem.
I have a new phone.
I have one new phone.
Use a because the phone is introduced for the first time and is not specific.
I enjoy reading before bed.
I like reading before I go to sleep.
Enjoy is followed by the -ing form reading.
I have visited London twice.
I went to London two times at some point before now.
This describes life experience. The exact dates of the visits are not given.
Common mistakes
- ❌ I visit my aunt yesterday. ✅ I visited my aunt yesterday.
- ❌ At six yesterday I was halfway through dinner preparation. I cooks when Anna called. ✅ At six yesterday I was halfway through dinner preparation. I was cooking when Anna called.
- ❌ Anna is more tall than Mia. ✅ Anna is taller than Mia.

- ❌ I waited for a hour. ✅ I waited for an hour.
- ❌ I enjoy read novels. ✅ I enjoy reading novels.

Learning tips
- Ask yourself whether the sentence refers to a finished past time. If it does, check whether the Past Simple is needed.
- For life-experience questions meaning 'at any time before now', Have you ever + past participle is a useful pattern.
- Always check the third form of irregular verbs after have or has: seen, gone, written, done.
- After did and didn't, return the main verb to its base form: Did you see? and I didn't see.
- Ever, never, just, already, and yet are useful clues for common A2 uses of the Present Perfect.
- Do not depend only on signal words. First decide whether the speaker is focusing on a finished past event or a connection to the present.
- Compare pairs of sentences to understand the perspective: I've lost my wallet focuses on the situation now; I lost my wallet yesterday focuses on when it happened.
