What are singular and plural nouns? A singular noun talks about one person, animal, place, or thing. A plural noun talks about two or more people, animals, places, or things. For example, book is singular because it means one book, while books is plural because it means more than one book. Regular plurals with -s Most English nouns become plural by adding -s at the end of the word. This is the most common plural rule. Examples: car → cars, student → students, apple → apples. Plurals with -es Some nouns need -es because their endings make pronunciation easier. Nouns ending in -s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, or -z usually take -es. Examples: bus → buses, watch → watches, box → boxes. Irregular plural nouns Some common nouns do not follow normal plural rules. Their forms change completely, so learners need to memorize them.
