By the end of this lesson, I can…
- Introducing a countable singular
- General plurals and mass nouns
- An identifiable referent
- Profession and role
- Names and contracted articles
- Context and grammatical role
Simple explanation
German articles depend not only on noun gender but also on meaning, context, and whether information is new, known, specific, or general. This B2 lesson explains when to use der, die, das, ein, eine, and when to use no article, with practical rules and examples.
Introducing a countable singular
Ordinary singular count nouns often need a determiner: Ich kaufe ein Buch. Ein/eine introduces an item; an identified later mention often takes der/die/das. First mention is not the whole rule, because shared situational knowledge can already identify a referent.
General plurals and mass nouns
General plurals and mass nouns can omit an article: Bücher sind teuer; Wasser ist wichtig. Zero article is not simply plurality. A mass noun can become countable for a kind or serving, as with ein Wasser in an order.
An identifiable referent
An identified group or substance naturally takes a definite article: die Bücher auf dem Tisch; das Wasser in diesem Glas. Definiteness concerns reference, not merely the presence of an adjective. Reconstruct context rather than mechanically translating article choices.
Profession and role
Unmodified profession labels after sein/werden often omit articles: Sie ist Ärztin. Description or evaluation naturally permits eine gute Ärztin. This does not remove articles from profession nouns everywhere: Ich kenne eine Ärztin is a different construction.
Names and contracted articles
Many country names omit articles: Deutschland. Others take them: die Schweiz, die Türkei, die USA. Im, am and zur contain contracted articles; zur Schule is not zero article. Learn the name, gender and prepositional construction together.
Context and grammatical role
Article choice is not simply translating one or that. Kind, individual, profession, fixed phrase and countability can differ. Then inflect the selected article for case: ein Buch, mit einem Buch. Determine reference and case as related but separate decisions.
