Simple explanation
Deverbalisierung and Verbalisierung describe the transformation between noun-based and verb-based structures in German. At C1 level, this skill helps learners understand academic texts, write formal German, and choose between a compact nominal style and a clearer verbal style depending on the situation.
Choose the established noun
Learn the established noun lexically: entwickeln → Entwicklung, informieren → Information, entscheiden → Entscheidung. The suffixes -heit and -keit commonly attach to adjectival bases; noun suffixes cannot be added freely to every verb.
Keep the meaning and sentence roles
When transforming a sentence, the original meaning and relationships must remain clear. The subject of a verb can often become a von-phrase or a genitive construction.
Use Nominalstil in formal contexts
Nominal structures are frequent in scientific papers, reports, and official documents because they compress information.
Avoid excessive nominalization
Too many nouns can make a sentence difficult to read. Skilled writers balance Nominalstil and Verbalstil depending on the purpose.
Scope, exceptions and choice
Reformulation must preserve relations: nach to nachdem for anteriority, wegen to weil for cause, trotz to obwohl for concession, and zur Verbesserung to um ... zu for purpose when the understood actor is clear. With different actors, damit is often clearer. Durch can identify the original agent; a genitive may represent an object but can be ambiguous. Converting a verb into a noun must not invent a new time, outcome or causal claim absent from the source.
Interpreting use in a text
Distinguish these readings through the sentence and its situation: ① The main action occurs after the stated process. ② The causal relationship must be preserved.

Revision and reasoning workshop
Write four sentences about one situation or separate situations at work, in research or in everyday life. Use at least three lesson patterns with a clear purpose. Then rewrite two sentences using alternative structures and explain the change in meaning, reference or tone. The sample gives four independent models for the first stage. This task is self-assessed and is not automatically scored; the multiple-choice test is separate.
