By the end of this lesson, I can…
- Unreal situations
- Expressing wishes
- Polite requests
- Using würde
- Important short forms
- Usage, exceptions and meaning
Simple explanation
Konjunktiv II in German is used to talk about wishes, unreal situations, possibilities, and polite requests. This lesson explains how to build it with würde, when to use forms like wäre and hätte, and how to apply it naturally in everyday conversations.
Unreal situations
Use Konjunktiv II when a situation is imaginary or different from reality. Example: Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, würde ich mehr lernen.
Expressing wishes
Use Konjunktiv II to describe wishes that are not true at the moment. Example: Ich wäre gern im Urlaub.
Polite requests
Konjunktiv II makes questions and requests softer and more polite. Example: Könnten Sie mir helfen?
Using würde
Most regular verbs can be used with würde + infinitive to create the Konjunktiv II form.
Important short forms
Important forms include ich hätte, du hättest, er hätte; ich wäre, du wärst, er wäre; wir hätten/wären. A short modal still takes its required infinitive: Ich könnte helfen. Do not add s in third-person singular.
Conditional clause order
A fronted wenn-clause is followed immediately by the main finite verb: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich helfen. Reverse order: Ich würde helfen, wenn ich Zeit hätte. The subordinate clause is verb-final; the main clause remains V2.
Usage, exceptions and meaning
Present Konjunktiv II usually expresses hypotheses, wishes or politeness, not necessarily past time. Distinguish hätte/wäre/könnte from hatte/war/konnte. Würde + infinitive is common, but do not combine würde hätte or würde könnte. Practise hätte gern + noun and würde gern + verb. Short versus würde forms depend on verb and register.
