- Method with indem
- The causal factor with dadurch, dass
- Without another action
- Instead of an expected action
- Verb placement and commas
- Method, purpose or cause
Simple explanation
Indem, dadurch dass and ohne dass are German subordinate clause structures used to explain how something happens, why a result occurs, or which action does not happen. At B2 level, these structures help learners create more precise and natural sentences for conversations, academic writing, and professional communication.
Method with indem
Indem expresses a method of performing or achieving something: Sie lernt, indem sie regelmäßig übt. The relationship must plausibly be methodological, not merely simultaneous. The finite verb closes the subordinate clause.
The causal factor with dadurch, dass
Dadurch, dass can identify a factor producing a result: Sie spart Zeit dadurch, dass sie online arbeitet. Dadurch belongs to the main clause and dass introduces the subordinate clause. Preserve their punctuation and order; the factor need not be someone's deliberate method.
Without another action
Ohne...zu normally uses a recoverable shared subject: Er ging, ohne sich zu verabschieden. Ohne dass permits an explicit independent subject: Er ging, ohne dass ich es bemerkte. Shared subjects do not make ohne dass categorically wrong.
Instead of an expected action
Anstatt/statt...zu contrasts an alternative with an expected action: Sie liest, statt fernzusehen. The separable infinitive is fernzusehen. Statt dass can state a different necessary subject explicitly; the alternatives are not interchangeable without checking reference.
Verb placement and commas
Indem/ohne dass/statt dass clauses end in a finite verb; the infinitive group ends in the zu-infinitive. Separate these clauses and ohne/statt/anstatt infinitive groups with commas. Fronting such a group also affects the main clause's verb-second arrangement.
Method, purpose or cause
Indem commonly gives method, um...zu purpose and weil cause. Sie lernt Deutsch, um in Berlin zu arbeiten states a purpose, not a guaranteed job. Select by the actual relationship and always recover the infinitive group's understood subject.
