- Use seitdem for continuing situations
- Usage, exceptions and meaning
Simple explanation
German temporal clauses explain when an action happens and how two events are connected in time. The conjunctions während, bevor, nachdem and seitdem help learners describe simultaneous actions, earlier events, completed actions and situations that started in the past and continue today.
The verb goes to the end of the subordinate clause
Temporal clauses are subordinate clauses, so the conjugated verb normally appears at the end.
Use während for simultaneous actions
When two actions happen at the same time, use während.
Use bevor for earlier actions
With bevor, the main-clause event happens before the event in the bevor-clause: Ich esse, bevor ich zur Arbeit gehe. First I eat; then I go to work.
Use nachdem for completed earlier actions
Nachdem shows that one action was finished before another action started.
Use seitdem for continuing situations
Read event order from meaning: with bevor the main event is earlier, with nachdem the subordinate event is earlier. Past narratives often use Plusquamperfekt after nachdem; other time frames differ. Seitdem can extend to a past reference time, not only now. Während can express contrast as well as simultaneity.
Keep the reference time
Past narrative can use Nachdem wir gegessen hatten, gingen wir. Present/future reference can use Nachdem ich gegessen habe, gehe ich. Do not repeat one fixed tense sequence regardless of viewpoint.
Fronted clause and bracket
Bevor du gehst, ruf mich an places the main finite verb after the subordinate clause, with an closing the separable bracket. The subordinate finite verb is final. The comma marks the clause boundary, not the end of the whole message.
Usage, exceptions and meaning
Read event order from meaning: with bevor the main event is earlier, with nachdem the subordinate event is earlier. Past narratives often use Plusquamperfekt after nachdem; other time frames differ. Seitdem can extend to a past reference time, not only now. Während can express contrast as well as simultaneity.
