Simple explanation
Why are there two present tenses in English? English uses different present tenses because not every present situation has the same meaning. Sometimes we talk about things that happen regularly, and sometimes we talk about actions happening at this moment. Present Simple and Present Continuous help us show this difference clearly. What is Present Simple? Present Simple is used for habits, routines, repeated actions, schedules, and general facts. It describes things that are normally true or happen regularly, not necessarily at the exact moment of speaking. What is Present Continuous? Present Continuous is used for actions happening now or situations that are temporary. It shows that something is in progress at the time we are speaking or during a short period of time. How can you choose the correct tense? Ask yourself one question: Is this something that happens regularly, or is it happening now? Regular actions usually need Present Simple. Actions happening now or temporarily usually need Present Continuous.

- ❌ I am go to school every day. ✅ I go to school every day. Every day describes a habit, so Present Simple is needed.
- ❌ She play tennis now. ✅ She is playing tennis now. Now shows an action happening at the moment, so use Present Continuous.
- ❌ He doesn't likes pizza. ✅ He doesn't like pizza. After does not, use the base form of the verb.
- ❌ They are work in an office. ✅ They are working in an office. Present Continuous needs am/is/are plus verb-ing.
- ❌ I watch TV at the moment. ✅ I am watching TV at the moment. At the moment usually describes an action in progress.
