Present Continuous

Use am/is/are + verb-ing for actions in progress and temporary situations.

Present Continuous

The present continuous normally describes an action happening now or around now, or a temporary situation. Build it with am/is/are plus the -ing form. Many stative verbs such as know or believe are not normally used in this form.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping the verb be.
  • Using the base verb after be.
  • Overusing continuous with stative verbs.

Learn it better

  • Practise with now and at the moment.
  • Contrast present simple and continuous.
  • Pay attention to -ing spelling changes.
