By the end of this lesson, I can…
- Werden plus perfect infinitive
- Choosing haben or sein
- Completion by a future time
- A conjecture about the past
- Questions, negatives and subordinate order
- Contrast with future-reference Perfekt
Simple explanation
Futur II is used in German to describe actions that will have been completed by a certain point in the future. It is also used to make assumptions about past events. The structure combines werden, the past participle, and haben or sein. This lesson explains the rules, uses, and common mistakes.
Werden plus perfect infinitive
Futur II combines finite werden + Partizip II + haben/sein: Ich werde den Bericht geschrieben haben. Keep the final infinitive auxiliary and distinguish it from passive formation. Verb-second concerns the finite element, not the entire verbal group.
Choosing haben or sein
Select the auxiliary used by that lexical verb's perfect: geschrieben haben, angekommen sein. Do not mechanically assign sein to every motion-related meaning; argument structure, sense and sometimes regional usage matter. Learn the verb–auxiliary combination in context.
Completion by a future time
With a future reference point, Futur II presents completion: Bis morgen werde ich alles erledigt haben. Bis morgen supplies the deadline. As with other predictions, the form is not a guarantee; context must identify the reference time.
A conjecture about the past
Futur II can conjecture about a past event: Er wird den Zug verpasst haben. If he has not arrived and this is the explanation, the event is not future. Identify event time separately from the speaker's present inference.
Questions, negatives and subordinate order
Yes/no questions begin with werden: Wirst du alles erledigt haben? In a subordinate clause it is final: ..., dass er angekommen sein wird. Nicht targets its intended scope; its position should not be treated as invariant.
Contrast with future-reference Perfekt
German Perfekt can also express future completion with a suitable time phrase: Bis morgen habe ich das erledigt. Futur II is not the only option. Conversely, do not silently turn conjectural Er wird angekommen sein into factual Er ist angekommen.
