By the end of this lesson, I can…
- Hypothetical present situations
- Würde and synthetic forms
- Past counterfactuals
- Past modals and Ersatzinfinitiv
- Requests, advice and regret
- Interpreting the use in context
Simple explanation
Konjunktiv II is used in German to express unreal situations, wishes, assumptions, polite requests, recommendations, and missed possibilities. At B2 level, learners use it to create more natural and flexible communication with structures such as würde, hätte, wäre, and modal verbs.
Hypothetical present situations
Hätte and wäre commonly express hypothetical having and being: Wenn ich mehr Zeit hätte, wäre ich entspannter. A past-looking subjunctive is not automatically past time. Read context and the whole verb group to distinguish present hypothesis, past or reporting substitute.
Würde and synthetic forms
Würde + infinitive is common with many verbs: Ich würde reisen. The infinitive has no zu and normally closes the main clause. Hätte, wäre and könnte often sound more natural than longer alternatives, without making every würde alternative categorically impossible.
Past counterfactuals
Past counterfactuals use hätte/wäre + Partizip II: Ich wäre früher gekommen. Auxiliary selection depends on the lexical verb, not gender or politeness. After a fronted condition, the result's finite verb precedes its subject: ..., hätte ich geholfen.
Past modals and Ersatzinfinitiv
A modal governing another verb uses Ersatzinfinitiv: Ich hätte früher gehen müssen, not gegangen gemusst. In the corresponding subordinate construction, hätte precedes the infinitive group: ..., wenn ich hätte gehen müssen. Do not generalize from a non-modal perfect.
Requests, advice and regret
Könnten Sie...? requests politely; Du könntest... suggests, while Du hättest...sollen can criticize or express regret. A shared grammatical mood does not guarantee the same tone; person, context, modal and time shape the interpretation.
Interpreting the use in context
Konjunktiv II can signal hypothesis, politeness or a reported-speech substitute. Sie sagten, sie hätten Zeit does not necessarily mean they lacked time. Establish whether the text imagines a different reality or merely reports a source before interpreting hätte.
