By the end of this lesson, I can…
- Modality and passive in one form
- Possibility, obligation and prohibition
- Präteritum and conditional forms
- A simple subordinate clause
- Perfekt and Ersatzinfinitiv
- Event modality versus evaluation
Simple explanation
German passive sentences with modal verbs combine the passive voice with meanings such as necessity, possibility, permission, or obligation. They are commonly used in instructions, rules, workplaces, and formal communication. This lesson explains the structure, word order, examples, and common mistakes for B2 learners.
Modality and passive in one form
The main-clause modal is finite, followed finally by Partizip II + werden: Der Bericht muss geprüft werden. Agree the modal with the passive subject. The agent may disappear, but other complements retain their grammatical roles.
Possibility, obligation and prohibition
Kann...werden can express possibility, muss...werden obligation and darf nicht...werden prohibition. Muss nicht usually means no obligation, not prohibition. Check the modal meaning and negation scope before changing an active sentence into a passive.
Präteritum and conditional forms
Präteritum changes the modal: Die Tür musste geöffnet werden. Hypothetical requirements or possibilities can use müsste/könnte. Werden remains infinitive in these patterns; do not randomly tense another element of the passive verb group.
A simple subordinate clause
With a simple finite modal in a subordinate clause, the final sequence is Partizip II + werden + modal: ..., weil die Tür geöffnet werden muss. Werden remains infinitive. Do not extend this order mechanically to Perfekt with Ersatzinfinitiv.
Perfekt and Ersatzinfinitiv
This Perfekt construction uses haben and a modal Ersatzinfinitiv: Die Tür hat geöffnet werden müssen. Subordinate haben precedes the verbal cluster: ..., weil die Tür hat geöffnet werden müssen. Do not add non-modal passive worden to this cluster.
Event modality versus evaluation
Der Bericht muss geprüft werden requires a check. Der Bericht müsste längst geprüft worden sein can express an expectation about an earlier check and has a different structure. Shared müssen alone does not establish equal time or meaning.
Modal passive verb order
With Ersatzinfinitiv in Perfekt and past Konjunktiv II, the finite auxiliary precedes the cluster; distinguish the simple verb-final pattern.
| Pattern | Main clause | Subordinate clause |
|---|---|---|
| Present | Der Bericht muss geprüft werden. | ..., weil der Bericht geprüft werden muss. |
| Präteritum | Der Bericht musste geprüft werden. | ..., weil der Bericht geprüft werden musste. |
| Perfekt with Ersatzinfinitiv | Der Bericht hat geprüft werden müssen. | ..., weil der Bericht hat geprüft werden müssen. |
| Present Konjunktiv II | Der Bericht müsste geprüft werden. | ..., wenn der Bericht geprüft werden müsste. |
| Past Konjunktiv II | Der Bericht hätte geprüft werden müssen. | ..., wenn der Bericht hätte geprüft werden müssen. |
| No obligation | Die Datei muss nicht ausgedruckt werden. | ..., weil die Datei nicht ausgedruckt werden muss. |
| Prohibition | Die Datei darf nicht gelöscht werden. | ..., weil die Datei nicht gelöscht werden darf. |
