By the end of this lesson, I can…
- Verb position
- Questions with möchten
- Usage, exceptions and scope
Simple explanation
Möchten is used in German to express wishes, preferences, and polite requests. It means something like “would like to” and is softer than wollen. In this lesson, you learn its forms, sentence structure, questions, negatives, and everyday uses with clear examples and practice.
Positive sentences
Structure: Subject + conjugated möchten + other information + infinitive verb at the end. Example: Ich möchte einen Kaffee trinken.
Negative sentences
Use nicht or kein/keine to make a sentence negative. Example: Ich möchte heute nicht arbeiten.
Questions with möchten
For yes/no questions, move möchten to the beginning. Example: Möchtest du Kaffee trinken?
Verb position
When there are two verbs, möchten is conjugated and the second verb stays at the end of the sentence.
Usage, exceptions and scope
Möchten expresses a polite current wish: ich möchte, du möchtest, er/sie/es möchte, wir möchten, ihr möchtet, sie/Sie möchten. Structurally it is a Konjunktiv II form of mögen; here it is taught as an everyday request pattern. A second infinitive is not compulsory: Ich möchte einen Kaffee. When present, it comes last: Ich möchte Kaffee trinken. Compare noun negation keinen Kaffee with action negation nicht arbeiten.
