By the end of this lesson, I can…
- Direction and comparative form
- Superlatives in two roles
- Strengthening or softening a difference
- Equality, ratio and units
- Distance from equality and covariation
- Precision about the comparison set
Simple explanation
German comparisons at B2 level go beyond simple forms like größer or schneller. Learners need to express intensity, gradual changes, and relationships between different levels. This lesson explains advanced comparison structures such as Komparativ, Superlativ, je ... desto ..., and modifiers like deutlich and wesentlich.
Direction and comparative form
Higher degree commonly uses -er: schneller, günstiger. Some forms are irregular: gut → besser, viel → mehr. Standard unequal comparison uses als. Evaluate the intended property; more expensive does not automatically mean better.
Superlatives in two roles
Adverbial or predicative superlatives commonly use am besten/am schnellsten; before a noun, der beste Weg and mit dem besten Weg require adjective endings. Do not insert am before an already determined noun; syntax and case govern the pattern.
Strengthening or softening a difference
Viel, deutlich and wesentlich can strengthen a difference; etwas and ein wenig soften it: deutlich besser, etwas günstiger. Immer + comparative can express progression: immer schwieriger. These modifiers do not supply fixed numerical amounts or percentages.
Equality, ratio and units
So...wie expresses equality; doppelt so...wie states a two-to-one ratio: doppelt so teuer wie. Prices of twenty and ten make the basis clear. Doppelt so groß needs a specified measure: length, area or volume.
Distance from equality and covariation
Nicht ganz so gut commonly suggests a limited gap; bei Weitem nicht so gut emphasizes a large one. Je mehr..., desto... connects changing degrees. That linguistic relation alone proves neither scientific causation nor an exact numerical function.
Precision about the comparison set
Der beste Kandidat ranks someone within a set; an unspecified set may overstate the evidence. Für diese Aufgabe am besten limits suitability to a particular task. State property, comparison set, time and supporting evidence to avoid unintended overclaiming.
