- Usage, exceptions and meaning
Simple explanation
Why are wenn and als confusing?
Both wenn and als can introduce time clauses, and both may correspond to English words such as “when.” However, German does not use them in the same situations. The key questions are whether the situation is conditional, repeated, or a one-time event in the past.
Using wenn for conditions
Wenn is commonly used when one action depends on a condition. In these sentences, wenn often has a meaning similar to “if.” For example: Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich mit. The main action happens only if the condition is fulfilled.
Using wenn for repeated situations
Wenn is also used for events that happen repeatedly. This can refer to the present or the past. Words such as immer, oft, jedes Mal, and normalerweise often show that the event is repeated.
Using wenn for the present and future
For many time clauses referring to the present or future, German uses wenn. For example: Wenn ich nach Hause komme, rufe ich dich an. German usually uses the present tense in this kind of future time clause.
Using als for one-time events in the past
Als is used when something happened once at a specific time in the past. For example: Als ich gestern nach Hause kam, war niemand da. The event is completed and is not presented as something that happened repeatedly.
Using als for a specific period in the past
Als can also introduce a completed period of life or a specific past phase, not only a short event. A typical example is: Als ich ein Kind war, wohnte ich in Hamburg.
Verb position after wenn and als
Wenn and als introduce subordinate clauses. In a German subordinate clause, the conjugated verb normally goes to the end. Compare: wenn ich Zeit habe and als ich zehn Jahre alt war.
When the subordinate clause comes first
If the wenn- or als-clause comes first, it is followed by a comma, and the conjugated verb of the main clause comes immediately after the comma. For example: Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich mit. Do not say: Wenn ich Zeit habe, ich komme mit.
When the subordinate clause comes second
The wenn- or als-clause can also follow the main clause. In that case, the main clause keeps its normal word order: Ich komme mit, wenn ich Zeit habe. The verb in the subordinate clause still goes to the end.
Usage, exceptions and meaning
Als commonly introduces one past event or a particular past life period; wenn conditions, repetitions and future situations. Childhood is long but one life period: Als ich ein Kind war. Repeated past events still take wenn: Immer wenn… . Both put the finite verb last; a subordinate clause first is followed immediately by the main finite verb. Ob reports whether and differs from conditional wenn.
Usage reference table
The table gives construction models. Meaning-question options follow the interface language; translated sentences appear in Examples.
| Pattern or function | Target-language model |
|---|---|
| Use als for one-time past events | Als ich ein Kind war, wohnte ich in Bonn. |
| Use wenn for repeated events in the past | Immer wenn ich als Kind krank war, brachte mir meine Mutter Tee. |
| Use wenn for most future time clauses | Wenn es morgen regnet, bleiben wir zu Hause. |
| Put the verb at the end of the subordinate clause | Wenn Anna müde ist, trinkt sie Tee. |
| Use verb-first order in the main clause after an initial subordinate clause | Wenn es nicht regnet, gehen wir in den Park. |
| Use als for one-time past events | Als Anna gestern kam, haben wir gegessen. |
Grammar formula
Condition with wenn
Wenn + Subjekt + ... + Verb, Verb + Subjekt + ...Wenn ich Zeit habe, komme ich mit.
Wenn-clause after the main clause
Subjekt + Verb + ..., wenn + Subjekt + ... + VerbIch komme mit, wenn ich Zeit habe.
One-time past event with als
Als + Subjekt + ... + Verb, Verb + Subjekt + ...Als ich in Berlin war, besuchte ich viele Museen.
Core rules
- 1
Use wenn for conditions
Use wenn when the main action depends on a condition: Wenn es regnet, bleiben wir zu Hause.
- 2
Use wenn for repeated events
Use wenn when something happens repeatedly or regularly: Wenn ich meine Eltern besuche, essen wir zusammen.
- 3
Use wenn for repeated events in the past
Past time does not automatically require als. If something happened repeatedly in the past, use wenn: Wenn wir Oma besuchten, gab es immer Kuchen.
- 4
Use wenn for most future time clauses
Use wenn for future situations: Wenn ich morgen fertig bin, rufe ich dich an. German normally uses the present tense here.
- 5
Use als for one-time past events
Use als for an event that happened once at a specific time in the past: Als ich gestern ankam, war das Geschäft schon geschlossen.
- 6
Use als for completed past periods
Use als for a specific completed period of life: Als ich Student war, wohnte ich in einer kleinen Wohnung.
- 7
Put the verb at the end of the subordinate clause
After wenn or als, the conjugated verb normally comes at the end: wenn ich müde bin; als wir in Berlin waren.
- 8
Use verb-first order in the main clause after an initial subordinate clause
If the wenn- or als-clause comes first, the main clause begins with its verb: Wenn du möchtest, helfe ich dir.
- 9
Usage, exceptions and meaning
Als commonly introduces one past event or a particular past life period; wenn conditions, repetitions and future situations. Childhood is long but one life period: Als ich ein Kind war. Repeated past events still take wenn: Immer wenn… . Both put the finite verb last; a subordinate clause first is followed immediately by the main finite verb. Ob reports whether and differs from conditional wenn.

Common mistakes
Learning tips
- Ask first: Is this a condition? If yes, wenn is usually correct.
- If you can replace “when” with “whenever,” you probably need wenn.
- If the sentence describes one specific event in the past, als is usually correct.
- Words such as immer, oft, and jedes Mal often signal repetition and therefore wenn.
- Expressions such as gestern, damals, or zum ersten Mal can point toward als when the event happened only once.
- After wenn and als, check the subordinate clause and make sure the conjugated verb is at the end.
- If the subordinate clause comes first, place the verb of the main clause immediately after the comma.
- Do not choose als only because the sentence is in the past; repeated past events still use wenn.
